Education
A graduate of Abingdon High School, Doug graduated from VHCC in 1985 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Police Science, then transferred to East Tennessee State University to pursue a Criminal Science Degree.
Career
After college, he worked for the Canadian Football League, the World League, and NFL Europe before landing jobs with the NFL. From his motorized wheelchair, Doug Blevins gained notoriety as the NFL’s first handicapped coach when he joined the New York Jets in 1994 and then began a six-season career as kicking coach for the Miami Dolphins in 1997. Additionally, he has worked with dozens of professional football players, including Matt Turk, David Akers, Joe Nedney, Olindo Mare, and Adam Vinatieri, who twice kicked Super Bowl-winning field goals using the skills he perfected under Doug’s direction.
Awards & Personal Life
Doug’s incredible story has been told in national publications and featured on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. He was nominated to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013 and named to the American Association of Community College’s Outstanding Alumni in 2014. He is currently building a home on White Top Mountain while he continues his private consulting business.
